5 golden rules for operating industrial zone wastewater plants

Field lessons for meeting limits at industrial zone plants whose wastewater changes constantly.

Common treatment plants in organised industrial zones are among the hardest plants to operate in Türkiye. Dozens of factories send wastewater with different pollutants at different times. Here are rules drawn from our operating experience at the Balıkesir and Aydın plants:

1. Control pre-treatment at the source

Regular inspection of factories’ pre-treatment plants and monitoring of sewer discharge limits is the most effective way to protect the main plant from shock loads.

2. Do not underestimate equalisation

Sufficient equalisation volume dampens sudden pH and COD loads and keeps the biological unit from collapsing.

3. You cannot manage what you do not measure

Inlet and outlet flow, pH, dissolved oxygen and sludge age should be measured online and logged in SCADA.

4. Optimise energy

Aeration can account for more than half of a plant’s energy use. Oxygen-controlled blower or aerator management delivers substantial savings.

5. Plan for sludge

If the disposal route for dewatered sludge (landfill, drying, incineration) is not planned in advance, the plant quickly runs into capacity problems.
